Matrescence, Perinatal transitions, & motherhood

Mother-centered occupational therapy

Working with mothers and families, Berdy Occupational Therapy provides mother-focused, family-centred, and co-occupation-based services focused on promoting women’s health, wellbeing, and functional capacities, addressing parent-child occupations, perinatal transitions, and the developmental stages of matrescence.

Women's occupational balance, health, and wellbeing

Adjusting to life with a new family member is often a major lifestyle change for parents and children. Berdy OT services are available to work with women throughout matrescence and perinatal stages. This includes occupational therapy assessments, reports, referrals, self-management plans, and therapeutic support for:

  • Perinatal transitions: Family planning, pregnancy, birth preparation, postnatal recovery, early mothering.
  • Functional issues: General movement, fatigue, sleep, continence, sex and intimate occupations.
  • Roles and relationships: Work, parenting, partner, mother-child, family, friendships, and community.
  • Emotional wellbeing: Self-esteem, motivation, confidence, self-efficacy, and identity.

Matrescence

It takes a village to raise children, nurture mothers, and support families. “Matrescence”, like adolescence, is the developmental process of becoming a mother. Our mother-centred OT approach considers the bio-psycho-social-political-spiritual elements of matrescence, and the transformative process of becoming a mother.

“Giving birth to a child does not automatically unleash a previously contained flood of maternal behavior. Nor… does it determine when a woman becomes a mother. The process of matrescence includes a subtle, supportive process of socialization into motherhood. In many cultures and for most women becoming a mother is their most dramatic life crisis.”

―Lucile Newman (1975)

Berdy Occupational Therapy’s unique approach embraces that families come in all shapes and sizes. By focusing on function, meaningful occupations, and goal-setting, our services draw from evidence-based practice to help parents develop skills, balance, and confidence with parenting co-occupations which can be difficult, restrictive, or overwhelming.

We take a holistic approach to occupational therapy, addressing the physical, emotional, and social needs of our clients as individuals and mother-infant pairs (dyads)

Co-occupation-based practice focuses on the interdependent occupations shared between two or more individuals, such as the mutual engagement of mother and infant in daily activities like feeding, sleeping, and play. In mother-infant dyads, co-occupations are vital because they foster bonding, attachment, and the development of both participants.

For occupational therapists, understanding co-occupations allows for interventions that support not only the mother's well-being but also the infant's growth and development, which is a dynamic relationship. This approach promotes holistic, person-centered care that acknowledges the interconnectedness of the mother and infant's needs and activities.
